Returned for Huntingdonshire unopposed under an agreement between his father and Lord Sandwich, he was classified in Bute’s list as one of Bute’s followers. He was appointed to the bedchamber in November 1762 on Rockingham’s resignation.
As a peer Montagu supported Grenville’s Administration; but after July 1765 adhered to Rockingham and on his death to Fox.
He died 2 Sept. 1788.
